SIM card registration in Poland - how it works
8 July 2026 · 4 min read

Prepaid SIM cards in Poland must be registered before they can be used normally. The process is straightforward: show an accepted identity document, provide the details required by the operator and the number is assigned to you. If you buy a starter pack from us, we can register it at the counter.
Why register a SIM card at all
Registering a number on a card is not the store's or operator's idea. This is a legal obligation: the prepaid number must be assigned to a specific person or company. Only after registration can the card be activated and used for calls, text messages and the Internet.
Buying a starter pack and inserting the SIM into a phone is not enough. You must also confirm who will use the number.
What to take with you to registration
Bring an accepted identity document and the starter pack you want to register. If you buy the SIM card from us, we will have the starter pack ready at the counter.
- Identity card - the most common and most convenient document for registration.
- Polish passport - if you don't want or can't use your ID card.
- Identification document of an EU or Swiss citizen - you need a PESEL number, and if you do not have it: a valid passport number.
- Passport or residence card - especially important for foreigners from outside the European Union and Switzerland.
- PESEL number, if you have it.
- The starter pack or phone number to be registered.
- In the case of a company - company data, for example NIP, REGON or KRS; sometimes authorization is also needed.
If you are a foreigner and do not have a Polish PESEL number, this does not mean a problem. During registration, the operator writes down the name, series and number of a valid document confirming identity - usually a passport or residence card.
Don't register your SIM card to a random person and don't send a photo of your ID to someone you don't trust. The number assigned to your data is your responsibility.
What does registration look like step by step
The process itself is short, but it's good to know what happens step by step. Thanks to this, there is no need to nervously search for a document or guess why the card is not yet connected to the network.
- Choose a starter pack or bring the prepaid SIM you want to register.
- The seller checks the identity document and data needed by the operator.
- The SIM card number is assigned to a person or company.
- The operator confirms registration in its system.
- You insert the card into the phone and wait for the services to be activated.
It usually takes several minutes. Sometimes the card works almost immediately, and sometimes the operator needs a moment to refresh the system. If after registration the phone still does not see the network, it is worth turning it off and on again.
Is it possible to register a SIM card in our store
Yes. At Sklep Sympatia, ul. Krótka 3 in Łomża, you can buy a starter pack and register the SIM immediately. This is especially convenient when the card will be used in a new phone, a phone for an older person, a child's phone or a spare device.
We can also insert the card, check the required SIM size, enable mobile data and help you choose a suitable prepaid offer. If the network settings do not arrive automatically - which can happen, for example, with Lycamobile - we can configure them manually on site.
When registration may take longer
Most often, everything goes smoothly. It takes longer when the data in the document is illegible, the number has already been used, the operator's system has a technical break or the registration concerns a company and additional data needs to be confirmed.
If the card is to be valid from a specific day, do not leave registration until the last five minutes before departure. It is better to do it calmly in advance and check whether the phone rings normally and connects to the Internet.
