Tempered glass or film - what actually protects a phone screen

23 June 2020 · 7 min read

Classic phone with tempered glass and foldable Samsung Galaxy Flip with foil on the screen

For most classic smartphones, we recommend good tempered glass tailored to a specific model. It better protects the screen from deep scratches and can absorb some of the energy during impact. The foil is thinner and flexible, so it works mainly against scratches and in devices where hard glass does not fit. At Sympatia, tempered glass starts from PLN 25. However, no protection guarantees that the screen will survive any fall.

Tempered glass or foil - the most important difference

Tempered glass creates a rigid layer over the screen. It tolerates everyday scratches from keys, sand and minor dirt well, and in some cases it cracks instead of the display. The foil is much thinner. It protects the surface against scratches, but does not distribute the impact force as effectively as glass.

  • Tempered glass: the best choice for most phones with a flat or slightly curved screen.
  • Protective foil: good against scratches when thinness and flexibility are important.
  • Case with raised edge: complements the protection by protecting the corners and limiting the contact of the screen with the ground.
  • Glass and foil: reduce the risk of damage, but do not replace careful use.

Restrictions
May break; must match the model and case
Our assessment
We mostly recommend it. Price from PLN 25

Glass with frame

What it protects against
Scratches and some impacts, also closer to the edges
The greatest advantage

Our assessment
We recommend after trying it on your phone

Flexible foil

What it protects against
Scratches, abrasions and minor dirt
The greatest advantage
Adapts to curves and unusual screens
Restrictions
Less protective against impact
Our assessment
Good choice for selected devices

UV bonded glass

What it protects against
Scratches and some impacts
The greatest advantage
Can cover a highly curved screen
Restrictions
Liquid glue can get into the cracks and disassembly can be difficult
Our assessment
We usually do not recommend if there is a safer alternative

Factory foil in a foldable phone

What it protects against
Flexible screen scratches
The greatest advantage
It is adapted to the bendable display
Restrictions
It should not be peeled off or covered with another layer
Our assessment
In the event of damage, we recommend service appropriate to the model

Tempered glass in our store starts from PLN 25. The price depends on the phone model, glass size, frame type and availability of a specific cut. Before installation, we quote the price and check the fit.

Why we recommend glass with a frame matched to the model

Well-chosen glass with a frame covers most of the front panel, has appropriate cutouts for the speaker and camera, and looks like part of the phone. It's easier to arrange them evenly, and the edges don't accidentally end up in the active area of the screen. The best effect is achieved with glass matched to both the phone model and the case used.

A frame does not always mean a better fit. If it is too wide, it may cover the edge pixels, and the glass that comes too close to the edge may be undermined by the case. Therefore, before installation, we apply the glass and check the entire set.

What glasses do we recommend in the Sympatia store

We recommend, among others, X-ONE glasses from the Glass Panels 9H series and Sapphire Series 9H+. However, we do not limit the selection to one brand. The most important thing is to properly match the glass to the phone, screen shape and case used.

  • Hardness 9H or 9H+ depending on the series, intended for protection against everyday scratches.
  • Oleophobic coating that reduces fingerprints and makes surfaces easier to clean.
  • Precise shape and cutouts tailored to a specific phone model.
  • Thin glass that maintains the screen's natural response to touch.
  • 2.5D rounded edges and, in selected variants, a black frame covering the edge of the screen.
  • Adhesive layer on the entire surface in appropriate variants, which improves the adhesion of the glass.

The oleophobic coating does not strengthen the glass when dropped. Reduces the deposition of greasy marks, facilitates cleaning and improves finger glide. This is a noticeable difference in everyday use, especially when the phone is often used for writing and scrolling. Over time, this layer naturally wears out.

When will protective film be a better choice

We choose foil when the screen is strongly rounded, the device has an unusual shape or the user primarily wants protection against scratches. The flexible material fits better on curves and is less noticeable under the finger. It is also a sensible solution for watches, tablet parts and equipment for which there is no well-fitting glass.

Folding phones are a separate category. The foil on the inner screen may be part of the display's design. Do not tear it off yourself or replace it with a random substitute. In case of peeling, blistering or damage to such a layer, it is safer to use the service appropriate for a given model.

Why we don't usually recommend glued and UV-hardened glasses

UV glass can adhere well to a highly curved screen, but requires spreading a liquid adhesive and curing it with a lamp. If the preparation flows beyond the glass, it may get into the speaker, buttons, microphone or other gaps. Once cured, removing the residue is difficult and may require taking the phone apart.

UV glass itself does not have to be less durable than ordinary tempered glass, but its installation and subsequent disassembly carry additional risks. A tightly bonded or inappropriate adhesive may leave residue, damage the screen coating, or make it difficult to safely remove the glass. Therefore, if ordinary glass or foil fits a given phone, we usually choose a simpler solution.

Samsung warns that the hardening fluid used in dome glass may penetrate the speaker or buttons and cause problems with their operation. This is an assembly risk, not proof that any UV glass will damage the display.

For which phones do we select glasses on site?

We select glasses for current and popular series, including iPhone 17, 16, 15, 14 and 13, Samsung Galaxy S26, S25, S24 and the popular Galaxy A models, as well as Xiaomi, Redmi, POCO, Motorola, realme, Honor and Huawei phones. The assortment changes with the market, so we always confirm a specific variant after the model designation.

In total, we support over 500 phone models. If there is no ready-made glass with the right cut, we can check the universal protection and adjust it to the dimensions of the device. On site, we also compare the glass with the case, clean the screen and install the protection immediately.

How to choose screen protection without guessing

  1. Check the exact model number in your phone settings.
  2. Decide whether impact protection or a thin anti-scratch coating is more important.
  3. Match the glass with the case so that the edges do not overlap.
  4. After installation, check the touch, fingerprint reader, camera and speaker.
  5. Replace the glass when it cracks badly, begins to crumble, or comes loose at the edge.

Frequently asked questions

Does tempered glass protect the screen from cracking?
Reduces risk and may absorb some of the impact energy, but does not provide a full guarantee. A lot depends on the place of the fall, the height, the surface and the case protecting the corners.
Is a protective foil enough for the phone?
Yes, if you mainly care about protection against scratches and abrasions. In the event of a fall, the foil protects less than tempered glass, so it is worth combining it with a well-fitting case.
Is it worth installing UV glass?
Only on selected phones when regular glass or foil does not fit the highly curved screen. Installation requires securing all gaps and experience, because the liquid glue is difficult to remove after hardening.
Do you install glass or foil on site in Łomża?
Yes. In the Sympatia store at ul. Krótka 3, we select the protection for the phone model and case, clean the screen and install the glass or foil in place.
Do you have glasses for older phone models?
We support over 500 models, including many older devices. The availability of a specific pattern depends on the current condition, so it is best to bring your phone or provide its exact designation.
How much does tempered glass for a phone cost?
In the Sympatia store, tempered glass starts from PLN 25. The exact price depends on the phone model, glass type and its availability. We always confirm the price before setting up.
